Musicians for Oxfam: Radiohead, will.i.am, and more | Oxfam America Blog

If you watched the Super Bowl last night, you may have caught a glimpse of the Oxfam America logo at the end of the commercial featuring will.i.am’s remix of the Who’s “My Generation.”  All proceeds from this high-profile new single will go to support Oxfam’s relief and recovery work in Haiti.

And will.i.am isn’t the only musician supporting Oxfam these days. Lots of bands, from chart-toppers to the relatively unknown, are hosting benefit concerts, putting out compilation CDs, recording public service announcements, and encouraging fans to donate via text message. My colleague Bob Ferguson blogged about some of these efforts a couple of weeks ago, and since then he’s been working with many more artists who want to contribute.

As a sometime music blogger, it amazes me to see these two worlds—music and NGO—collide in such unexpected ways. Then again, my fellow music geeks (uh, fans) are really passionate about the bands we love, so it only seems fitting to link that energy and dedication to a worthy cause.

Take Radiohead’s concert a couple of weeks ago in Los Angeles, where the band raised $572,000 to benefit Oxfam’s Haiti relief work. Fans bid in special auctions for tickets, and according to the Huffington Post, they paid an average of $440 each to see Radiohead perform at a smaller venue. Now that’s dedication. (For those of us who missed the Radiohead show, there are some great photos posted on Pitchfork Media, including a shot of Oxfam staffers in action.)

In the meantime, keep an eye on our website for more Oxfam and music news.

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Radiohead raised more than $500,000 for Haiti earthquake relief at a special weekend concert that attracted celebrities and die-hard fans.

The band performed for more than two hours Sunday at the Henry Fonda Theatre. The star-studded crowd included Justin Timberlake, Jessica Biel, Charlize Theron, Anna Paquin and Daniel Craig.

Attendees bid online for tickets, with proceeds going to Oxfam International, a group that works with developing countries. Prices went as high as $4,000 for a pair of tickets. The closing minimum bid was $475.

Lead singer Thom Yorke joked with the crowd about the ticket prices, saying, ''What did you do to get a ticket? Get money from your dad? Or blackmail your boss?''

Timberlake took in the show from the floor in the general admission area, singing along with the band's hits, which included ''Fake Plastic Trees,'' ''Paranoid Android,'' ''Lucky'' and ''The Bends.''

''I love them for the same reason everyone loves Radiohead,'' Timberlake told The Associated Press. ''I have been listening to them since I was 13.''

At work on a new album, Radiohead took a break from the studio to put together the special one-time benefit show at the 1,300-seat theater, a relatively small venue for the band. Funds also were raised from the sale of limited-edition show posters, which went for $25 each. Oxfam volunteers collected cash donations dropped into green buckets at the theater's entrance.

Tickets were sold only in pairs, prompting fans to search for bidding partners online.

Shane Rivers of Sacramento, who says he's seen the band 15 times, found his plus-one on Craigslist.

''I drove seven hours to be here,'' said Rivers, who paid $600 for his ticket. ''It was special to be in the room.''

Rob Molt of San Diego said he feverishly bid for days to win his $475 ticket. He said he would have spent ''whatever it took to see such a beautiful band do such a beautiful thing.''

''I hope how special this night was translates,'' he said. ''I was expecting to be the runt in a Hollywood crowd, but it was all real Radiohead fans.''

Radiohead Raises $572,000 for Haiti with Oxfam America at the Henry Fonda Music Box | LAist

radiohead-haiti-concert.jpg Late Thursday Radiohead announced that it would perform a charity show benefiting the survivors of the devastating January 12th earthquake in Haiti. The tickets were made available via a Ticketmaster auction which ended with a final minimum bid of $475 (meaning many secured their tickets for $450). Some went above and beyond as the proceeds were going to Oxfam America's Haiti Relief Fund and the high bid was $2,000 per ticket (for either 2 or 4 tickets), according to the band.

All in all more than $572,000 was raised in fans' donations and it was an unforgettable, intimate gig for all at the 1,300-capacity theater. Here's the setlist:
